A powerful magnitude-7.6 earthquake shook Mexico's Guerrero state on Tuesday not far from Acapulco, a major tourist destination. The quake was followed by a powerful aftershock.

The temblor, which hit around noon local time, was felt throughout central southern Mexico, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. However, telephone service was spotty throughout the area.

The epicentre of the quake was located 186 kilometres from Acapulco. The National Seismological Survey in Mexico said the quake had an epicentre southwest of Ometepec and occurred 10 kilometres underground.

Frightened workers spilled out of swaying buildings in Mexico City.
